Mathematischer Salon

The Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics (HIM) invites to the "Mathematischer Salon".

Date:

Thursday, November 16, 2023 – 8 p.m

Talk:

Grant Sanderson

"A seemingly pointless pursuit of prime spirals "

A student once was playing with polar coordinates and decided to try plotting the points (p, p), where p is a given prime number. What they saw was a beautiful and surprising. Exploring the image can reveal some fascinating number theory, but perhaps not for the reason the student initially would think.

3Blue1Brown is a math YouTube channel created and run by Grant Sanderson. The channel focuses on teaching higher mathematics from a visual perspective, and on the process of discovery and inquiry-based learning in mathematics, which Sanderson calls "inventing math". As of August 2023, the channel has 5.4 million subscribers.

Music:

Duo ArcEnCiel

Flutist Liene Krole and harpist Helene Schütz are united by their enthusiasm and commitment to chamber music. Already during their studies they played together as scholarship holders of the foundation "Villa Musica", from which their intensive collaboration as a duo developed. Since then, the musicians have been on the road in different musical formations and styles, but always come together as the duo "ArcEnCiel": here, their passion is especially for the works of musical impressionism and its tonal diversity, which is as colorful as the rainbow (French: arc en ciel) that gives it its name.
